The project aims to promote understanding of climate change issues in the community and so enable people to contribute to climate action in the biosphere.
Did you know that SE Qld has been identified globally as one of two national hotspots for climate change impact? Whether you agree that climate change is caused by humans or not, community resilience in extreme weather events is already important in view of recent floodings and bush-fires.

The Noosa Biosphere Climate Action Project has been recognised by UNESCO amongst 28 global biospheres for its efforts to promote debate, foster exchange and develop actions at a local level to push back on the effects of climate change. Download the June 2011 report here:

Floating Land was the first ever major project endorsed by Noosa Biosphere in 2009 and will be occurring again in 2011 with a focus on water culture. The culture board is partnering with local initiatives in order to help promote and foster Biosphere values and supports this very successful bi-annual event.
Floating Land is a showcase for local and international artists who have a connection with both the water and the land. People who are connected to their community and ‘place’ are more likely to care for their community and the environment.
The purpose of the program "Voices of the Biosphere" on Community Radio 101.3 FM is to communicate biosphere news and activities in a magazine style program. The NBL radio team: Michael, Kate, Sonya and Celia engage the community in discussion and debate on topics relevant to the biosphere.
Tune in every Friday 11am - 12pm 101.3 FM.

Our social board's yarning circles are about conversations in the community. We have developed activities around the circles such as the Labyrinth and the 'I wish' community gallery collection. The first was held at Cooran eco market in March 2010, another one at Noosa Biosphere Day 2010. Yarning circles are about fun and playful ways to engage everybody in conversations about community needs, issues and wishes.
The social board's labyrinth had it's first outing on Biosphere Day 2010. The labyrinth was painted on canvas by a local artist and is portable to be used at community events. The labyrinth is about walking meditation and mental well-being.
To borrow the labyrinth for your community event send an enquiry to our social board.
All the crockery and the kitchen sink to make community events waste free. WaW is a joint project between NICA, the social and the environment sector board. WaW is a community washing up system complete with water heating, water cycling, and all the unbreakable crockery a community event would need.
The project aims to promote awareness of the Biosphere in the Primary School Community and introduce students to the meaning and significance of the Noosa Biosphere. It is envisaged that this may evolve into a part of the school curriculum in the future.
Develop a working knowledge of the drivers and constraints on environmental, economic, social and cultural sustainability in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. Use this knowledge to guide the development of indicators to measure actual, or possible changes in the Biosphere sustainability.
The proposed centre would operate at the interface between sustainability theory and practice to improve environmental conservation, maintain cultural diversity and social inclusion and support the development of "quality economies" to improve livelihoods. By combining theory and experience, the Centre will enhance both the development delivery of knowledge related to sustainability. It is proposed that the Centre will also facilitate the exchange of information between biospheres, other communities and policy makers and connect the experience gained in Biospheres with more formal research and education networks.
The Environment Board agreed that every activity / function and event of NBL include carbon offsets and recommended that carbon offsetting for the Noosa Biosphere Day be managed through "Climate Friendly" in the first instance. A number of projects are being undertaken through the Ecobiz Program. Funding was obtained through DERM to develop a cluster group, working with 20 businesses at Peregian.
The project will record and monitor the state of the natural environment in the Noosa biosphere to identify gaps in knowledge of the natural environment, collate and source existing knowledge and identify threats to the natural environment.
The culture board is supporting the NFA film exhibition showcasing biospheres from around the world.
The NFA curated the movie 'Biosphere an invitation to share' in 2009. Meg Lawrence has since been successfully promoting and extending this global collaboration. She has received submissions from Great Sandy Biosphere, Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Fitzgerald Biosphere in Western Australia and Devon in the U.K.
