Board members work strategically monitoring human impacts on the environment, suggesting mitigation measures, and with organisations restoring environmentally degraded areas.
The Board is also working alongside both businesses and the community to ensure land and water areas used for human activity are managed sustainably.
Noosa’s environmental credentials are one of the fundamental reasons behind the region being awarded Biosphere status. The Environment Sector Board plays a key role in collaborating with the community, including the other sector boards, to ensure that our environmental values are maintained.
Before developing comprehensive strategies for the protection of our environment, we must first better understand our current circumstances. The Environment Sector Board is developing benchmarks and monitoring systems to measure the health of our natural environment as an indicator of the success of future biosphere actions.
Through the development of these benchmarks, including the continual development of flora and fauna databases, the Board will be increasing the local knowledge of ecological functions of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve.
Data collected will then help provide the community with much needed ‘call to action’ material if our natural systems start to degrade.
It is well understood that Noosa’s natural environment needs to be both protected and enhanced for the benefit of future generations and long-term conservation of our biological diversity.
There are many valuable environmental protection initiatives already being effective within our local community. We recommend that you take a look at the Get Involved section of this website and explore the list of groups and the volunteer pages for opportunities to contribute.
The Environment Sector Board has been actively collaborating with other organisations, some examples include the endorsement of programs from both the Noosa Integrated Catchment Authority and Noosa Landcare.
The Board is also developing new projects such as plastics use reduction and Koala population monitoring for the whole of Biosphere.
Education and communication is critical for environmental strategies to be implemented in any community. Luckily we have many passionate volunteers throughout our greater Noosa area who are committed to spreading the word and volunteering to help make a difference.
All of our sector Boards play a role in encouraging sustainable lifestyles and activity and some focal areas for our Boards’ attention include (but not limited to):
Through collaboration and active participation the Environment sector board will continue to play a critical role towards the Biosphere’s overall objectives and activities.
