Community Art Competition: Noosa Integrated Catchment Assn. NICA, has announced the Noosa’s Native Plants Surface Design Community Art Competition. Artists are invited to produce two-dimensional artworks inspired by LOCAL native plants.
Any medium will be accepted with the aim of developing an exhibition of works that would be suitable for progressing to surface design for a variety of uses. From meticulous botanical studies to broadly interpretive pieces with an end product in mind – all will be welcome, but the criteria is that the work has an iconic NOOSA flavour and the plants depicted should be local native species.
Finalists will be displayed at the Noosa Library from 14th to 28th August and winners will be announced at Noosa Biosphere Day on 18th September. Entries close on 10th August and entry forms can be downloaded from the NICA website.
Glorious Colour
Colour is an important element of all design and today’s photograph shows brightly coloured plants against a background of subtly-toned sedges. Yellows and golds are in evidence at the moment with many wattles in flower. With the red spidery flowers of the Firewheel Tree, and the blue of Dampiera stricta , the primary colours are at our fingertips, while the bright pink Pigface on our beaches stands out against its silvery succulent leaves.
It will be interesting to see what community artists come up with as they seek to depict Noosa in all its sub-tropical splendour. Already one school has indicated interest in the competition and we hope to see some new ideas from young artists, alongside our talented local painters who may well be trying something new as they imagine their designs applied to fabric and other mediums.
