How far is it to the edge? At some point business and community is going to clash if one keeps pushing the other.
(Business) Council president Graham Bradley says all current spending should be reviewed and disability pensions may not be the best use of government money it goes on to explain but my first reaction as someone who works as a volunteer with other volunteers ( given the many $b worth of voluntary and underpaid work in the disability sector every year in this country) is outrage!
There are people who are disabled and do work ( House With No Steps has secured a number of work contracts being filled by people with disabilities and no doubt Endeavour and others have as well).
Sure there may be many more people on disability pensions who could work, but there are probably also lots that have disabilities from working eg backs, elbows, hearing damage, blindness, lung and throat damage, stress and other mental health issues. All of these diminish quality of life long after they finish working and many of those were never compensated for their physical discomfort, and loss of ability, loss of independence and restrictions on where they can go and what they can do.
This looks like businesses made money out of them when they could and care nothing for them before or after. And you want them back in the workforce? Is that a joke?
And another thing some jobs are just un-do-able. They wreck families as well as bodies. Maybe this review could also look at that issue - the savings on disability and health support in the long term could be worth a hell of a lot.
The govt spend on disability support, they say may not be the best use of govt money.
Well I say the govt spend is matched (maybe more than matched) by volunteer work.
Perhaps if business put greater effort into health, safety AND well being of workers as its contribution to social sustainability, the govt could cut its spending on disability services without cutting payments to people who have no other way of making enough money to live.
I object strongly to people being seen as a commodity, only here for the pleasure of some entrepreneur to make money out of! What's more, glossing over the BC objective of cutting govt spending on disability services by mentioning being at work is good for you just doesn't cut it, sorry.
Yes the economy is important but it is not the be all and end all and it may come as a surprise to some the many able bodied members of the population who work and are still barely scraping together enough money to pay the bills, let alone buy a house may be starting to lose faith in the economy as an avenue for fulfilment!
A song just came to mind ..... I don't like Mondays!
