The community garage sale in Spoonbill St Peregian is now in its third year. It aims to support a community approach to sustainability by encouraging residents to move on any unwanted household items rather than disposing into landfill. At the same time residents can gain a small financial benefit.
- SATURDAY 4th September from 7am
- Spoonbill St, PEREGIAN BEACH
- 10 garage sales in the one street to benefit the community
Two and a half years later, the street community has undertaken a diverse arrange of activities which continue to encourage the connectivity between community and the environment. To date they have hosted Bushcare working bees, community street meetings, a kids street arts workshop, surveyed residents on what they see as the future for Spoonbill, collected data about current resident sustainability practices, tracked koalas, shared household equipment and home grown produce and even tracked the owners of local lost dogs!!! Approximately one quarter of the street precinct is now registered and participating in the Living Smart Homes program, a Council program designed to promote and support positive sustainability behaviours by minimising water, waste, energy and transport usage. To date Spoonbill Street maintains the largest concentration of households participating in the program across the Sunshine Coast. As a result of this ongoing commitment to simple sustainability practices, the street enjoys an amazing level of support from a range of community, business and government organisations including Noosa Landcare, Noosa Parks Association, Engenero, Action Tanks, Noosa Lighting, Green Sunshine, Australian Wildlife Hospital, Koala Diaries, Australian Koala Foundation, Noosa Biosphere, Coolum/ Peregian Vet, LJ Hooker Peregian Beach, TravelSmart and Living Smart Homes, Sinc Design, Peregian Surf Club and others. They have 10 "Spoonbillian" households participating in the sale this year with items ranging from furniture, sporting goods, office items, toys, clothes, china/ glass ware, bric-a-brac, pottery to home made goodies. There will be a sausage sizzle for breakfast shoppers and the Cafe2u mobile coffee van will be serving Belaroma coffee. Battery World will again be collecting any old or spent batteries from cars, mobile phones, torches, epirbs and cameras etc which will be recycled. Residual goods will be donated to Bloomhills to help raise money for cancer patient support. The efforts invested by the Spoonbillians to make our community and surrounding environment a better place are yielding results. Not only have there been recent births for happy residents, but also families are purchasing properties and designing and building environmentally friendly homes. One such family has just moved into their "green" home and their first street community action is joining our garage sale event. For the second year they will be raising funds for the Australian Koala Foundation by selling No Tree No Me stickers. Last year they sold close to 300 stickers which enabled the street to sponsor a koala at Lone Pine, aptly named Barnacle. This year the kids in the street are hopeful to sell another 200 so they can sponsor a second koala. Funding enables the Australian Koala Foundation to support research projects which protect koalas and their habitat. And.... right on call - Mumford the koala who was saved by Peregian residents in February and released back into Wagtail Street in April has been heard and seen consistently in the Nth Peregian area. He was seen and heard in Spoonbill only a few nights ago - a sure sign he is looking for a mate. Spoonbill Street residents have now made a request to the Australian Wildlife Hospital for the translocation of a female koala to the North Peregian area to help Mumford find a female into the future as concerns about the local koala population's survival become more evident. The current koala population in the area may now be as low as 3 or as high as only 5 as we gather more information about each koala seen.
