You are invitied to a community meeting at Peregian on Saturday 3rd July from 10am to midday to find out more about your Biosphere and take part in a discussion that will identify ways in which we can all work together.
The Noosa Biosphere was declared by UNESCO in 2007 and has three complimentary functions
∗ Conservation
∗ Sustainable development and
∗ Learning.
The biosphere status was conferred on Noosa because communities were already working towards these key objectives.
Communities in the southern end of the biosphere in Peregian and surrounding areas demonstrate these functions in many ways. Through the actions of individuals, bushcare groups and organisations such as the Coolum Coast Care they promote the conservation of landscapes, ecosystems and our natural species.
The community has many examples that foster human development that is socially, culturally and ecologically sustainable – the local markets, the Originals, community-based initiatives such as the collective formed by the Spoonbill Street residents, and the Veggie Village are examples of this.
We seek to form and strengthen partnerships between the community and the Noosa Biosphere Community Boards to promote and assist in the achievement of the key Biosphere functions.
There are many projects underway within the Biosphere community boards; and we would like to share these. In particular we would like to see how Biosphere projects can assist the local community to achieve similar goals.
Here are some of the projects the Environment Board is working on
∗ Plastics are a threat to many aspects of our environment. We want to reduce the use of plastics in our community; reducing the use of plastic bags is one of the initial objectives.
∗ We are seeking to engage the community in developing a ‘State of the Biosphere’ report. This reporting will enable the community to contribute to the information collected and will report to the community how well we are doing in achieving the three biosphere functions.
∗ A broader project which lies across all sectors of the biosphere boards is examining the impact of climate change on our communities and working towards identifying ways of ‘climate-proofing’ the biosphere.
You are invited to come along to a meeting with the Noosa Biosphere Community Environment Board at the Peregian Community House on Saturday 3rd July from 10am – 12md to find our more about your biosphere and take part in a discussion that will identify ways we may work together to achieve the functions of the biosphere.
We welcome groups or individual to bring along displays, brochures and sign-on sheets for organisations that support biosphere functions. If you would like to give a brief presentation on your activities please phone Seonaid (5448 3190) by June 18th.
Morning Tea will be supplied.
