The greater Noosa region was designated a Man and the Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2007 and the current boundaries of this internationally recognised reserve are those of the former Noosa Shire Council.
Noosa Biosphere Ltd was formed shortly after UNESCO designation and is as local government–community partnership created to mirror the former Council’s volunteer community sector advisory boards.
The Biosphere sector board volunteers wish to seek community interest in the possible extension of the biosphere boundaries to include the Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale regions, and will therefore hold community meetings on the 12th and 13th of December to discuss the option with local residents and businesses. Times and dates below:
- When: Monday 12th December 2011
- Time: 6.30pm (light refreshments will be supplied)
- Where: Eumundi CWA Hall, 80 Memorial Drive Eumundi
- RSVP: Not required, please feel welcome to bring family and friends.

- When: Tuesday 13th December 2011
- Time: 6.30pm (light refreshments will be supplied)
- Where: Noosa Pengari Steiner School HALL, 86 Nyall Road Doonan.
- RSVP: Not required, please feel welcome to bring family and friends.
All interested persons are welcome to attend these meetings and are warmly encouraged to come along to learn about biosphere reserve opportunities and to also share with others your ideas or opportunities for your region.
Message from the Inaugural Chair of Noosa Biosphere Ltd Mr Michael Donovan below;
“The awarding of the Noosa Biosphere reserve is a celebration of the success and hard work of the community both past and present.”
“That community spirit doesn’t just stop at the former Noosa shire council boundaries and the Noosa Biosphere volunteers (under the Noosa Biosphere Ltd community sector board structure) wish to work in partnership with neighbouring communities on projects and opportunities to strengthen sustainable development, conservation and education opportunities.”
“In partnership we wish to explore the opportunity to broaden the boundaries of the existing man and the biosphere reserve and present back to UNESCO a compelling case to award a boundary change to include like minded communities and landscapes such as yours in Eumundi, Verrierdale and Doonan.”
“However we can’t do this alone, we need your support.”
“We believe that an extended Noosa biosphere reserve boundary will strengthen the opportunities within your region and that you too can then capitalise on Man and the Biosphere reserve status as well as strengthen the partnerships across like-minded community groups.”
