The Sunshine Coast Litter Collective is a unique and innovative collaboration of community, industry and government organisations working on reducing the impacts of litter in local waterways. More than 150 volunteers work routinely throughout the year, including volunteer crews of six boats patrolling river and canal systems from Noosa to the Pumicestone Passage.
Our very own Noosa Integrated Catchment Authority (NICA) was part of the Sunshine Coast Litter Collective that received two awards on 20 of May at the Annual Healthy Waterways Awards evening. The two awards were '7 News Clean Up Award' and the 'Minister’s Grand Prize'
The project was voted the most innovative of all entries by an independent judging panel!
The Sunshine Coast Litter Collective has used public education, data collection surveys, infrastructure improvements, on-water working crews and litter collection days to reduce the impacts of litter and improve waterways.
From NICA..."We thank our many volunteers who help us at cleanup events (notably Cleanup Australia Day, but also on regular cleanups by volunteer river rangers and divers). Our Council funded Waste Wise Schools and Keep Our Biosphere Beautiful programs also contributed a great deal to this accomplishment."
It is worth noting that the Waste Wise Schools Initiative is endorsed by the Noosa Biosphere as meeting Biosphere reserve functions.
