Launched this week, a new Koala website with survey capacity powered by GIS technology has been hailed a critical milestone in the fight to save our Koalas.
The new website called Koala Diaries has been built and championed by local Koala campaigners Carolyn Beaton and Alex Harris.
Once you get past the front page, log on to become a member and then start to investigate some of the powerful survey capacity, you will be pleasantly surprised.
I had the privelege of attending the launch, and was totally blown away by what the GIS technology can do.
Powered (and generously donated) by ESRI, the website can plot coordinates of koala sightings on a map for viewing by everyone. So not only can you upload your koala sighting, you can also take a look at the map to see where some of the koalas have been according to community submissions.
The Noosa Biosphere has a Koala challenge page, also with information about Koalas and survey capacity.
And of course, there are other websites with koala (and other fauna) survey capacity such as the Wildlife Preservation Society's Faunawatch program.
So together, we will all collaborate and ensure that the data gets into the right hands!
