Every spring and summer up to 40,000 migratory birds call the sand bars at the Noosa River mouth their temporary home. These international travellers are here to rest and recuperate after their long flights from as far away as Arctic Asia, Alaska and the North Pacific.
The birds stay here to refuel ahead of their return journey back to their breeding grounds in the Northern Hemisphere.
Please do not disturb them! If disturbed the birds take flight and this seemingly harmless action uses the energy needed to recoup and build up condition. Without proper rest they won’t be ready for their flight home and may only get half way and die of exhaustion.
So please don’t chase the birds—watch them quietly from a distance and ask your friends to do the same.
