If you are anything like me, you wouldn't normally be too phased about stories regarding sharks, as we have all the heard the anecdote that you are much more likely to die in a car crash.
When reading Sunshine Coast Daily online just now, it was with a little fear and trepidation that I quickly scanned the latest article about a 2.8m bull shark found inland of Noosa.
The reason for my fear is that my kids have recently 'discovered' a couple of swinging ropes into Weyba Creek and have had a blast jumping in and out of the river. This went on for a couple of days however, recently we stopped this activity due to fears for their safety (including the potential for broken glass in the mud).
Reading about this bull shark, where it was caught, and the interesting comments from other readers of the blog regarding (over)fishing / killing of sharks it makes me wonder about the fine balance between the environment and our society.
When is it ok to kill an animal that is native to our region?
I am of the school of thought to leave animals alone unless there is an immediate and dire threat to your own personal safety (i.e. if the animal is charging for you and you can't run away... then I admit I would pull the trigger!)
If you wish to find out more about this shark species, here is a handy link to a web page about the bull shark at the Australian Museum.
