The Noosa Biosphere Day (Sunday September 19) is set to include an international flavour with a planned exhibition of films and images from Biospheres all over the world.
Chair of the Biosphere Culture Board, Sue Davis, said a film tent would be set up at Noosa Woods to showcase films from various countries and organisations that illustrated how people lived and worked within recognised biospheres.
These include local EcoFlicks, Biosphere and The Catchment Collective art in nature film.
“We are also delighted to be working in collaboration with the Noosa Federation of Arts who initiated the Noosa-based film Biosphere,” Ms Davis said.
Chairman of the Noosa Federation of Arts (NFA) Meg Lawrence recently returned from London and Paris where she was harnessing support for the film ‘Biosphere’ and its companion film ‘The Catchment Collective’ and spreading a cultural message to Biospheres around the world.
“They fell over with enthusiasm with these films,” Ms Lawrence said of her meetings with UK Biosphere Chairman Andy Bell and UNESCO’s Dr Ishwaran.
She said the positive meetings sparked the idea of all Biospheres telling their message through art and film.
Ms Lawrence said NFA and Noosa Biosphere Culture Board were now collaborating with other Biosphere communities to encourage them to develop their own films using the Noosa films as a template.
“And so far the other biospheres are responding brilliantly,” she said.
“We want to demonstrate how science and the arts can interact and overcome all language barriers.
“Art and culture is a vehicle to get our message to the world and offers an understanding of how man and biosphere can interact with each other.”
Ms Lawrence said she would be working closely with the Biosphere Cultural Board and writing to the 555 Biospheres around the world encouraging them to get involved with Noosa’s Biosphere Day by submitting film and images.
The exhibition will then travel to the Great Sandy Straits, the Mornington Peninsula, Paris and the rest of the world.
“This is about bringing Noosa to the attention of other Biospheres around the world and forging greater relationships through culture and art,” Ms Lawrence said.
Ms Davis said the Culture Board was also keen to hear from more people who have a short film that could be included in the Biosphere Day film tent.
“The focus can be broader than the natural environment and can include cultural, heritage and other aspects of daily life,” Ms Davis said.
