After the success of the Noosa biosphere community day last September, biosphere volunteers are planning to repeat that same grass roots approach and create an even bigger and better event this coming September.
“We are already well into the planning phase and preparing information kits for all the local community and environment groups” said Mr Tony Haslam one of the key organisers of the event.
“The event is a celebration of our broader community, both the past and the future.
“It’s about gaining biosphere reserve status on the strength of past community involvement, as well as celebrating current activities that support biosphere functions going forward.
“Last year we had over 70 community groups, environment groups and performers involved and despite some dark clouds we had over 2000 locals and visitors join in the celebrations”.
This year’s event is scheduled for Sunday the 18th of September from 10am to 3pm and will again be held at the Noosa Woods area.
“We will also be working on a sustainable transport plan to help folks leave their cars behind and we have a final year University student intern helping us with this challenge.” Continued Mr Haslam.
Catherine Pickham is studying tourism and event management at the University of the Sunshine Coast and chose to work with the Noosa Biosphere from a field of possible candidates because of the environmental and community values displayed.
“My task is to help the team with the event and in particular create alternative options to travelling by car to the event such as bus, cycling and walking paths and muster points” said Ms Pickham.
“This is a great challenge and provides me with the chance to put my passion for sustainability and tourism into action within a community environment as unique as the Noosa biosphere reserve.
“The event is planned to lessen Noosa’s ecological footprint through adopting sustainable transport methods, fostering local business, and educating attendees on their role in achieving a sustainable community.”
